Shabana Kaladgi was one of the original seamstresses taking part in our project. Unfortunately, she has since had to withdraw her participation as her husband will not allow her to work.
Shabana’s brave story is both inspiring and saddening, and it highlights the cultural barrier that many Indian women face and the motivation behind the establishment of Satara. Shabana began the Satara training course against the wishes of her husband. He threatened her with divorce and moved into his mother’s house, leaving her and their children behind. Shabana ignored this threats and persisted with the training course. However, her husband then turned to violence, beating Shabana into submission.
Out of fear for her and her children’s lives, Shabana no longer takes part in the fashion project.
