Manjula Kabade is 28 years old. She married when she was 19 years old but, after only 6 months of marriage, her husband was killed in an accident. He was 24 years old and was hit by a car. She has one daughter, Rajeswari, who is 9 years old. Manjula and her daughter now live with her parents. Her father works as a cook in a hostel and her mother is a housewife.

Manjula is entitled to receive substantial compensation from the driver who hit her husband, but after 9 years has still not received anything at all. She is trying to bring the case to court, but does not have any knowledge of the legal procedure and is struggling to compensate her lawyer.

Manjula had to quit school in the sixth grade due to financial difficulties and began to work as a housemaid. At the age of 23 she followed a tailoring course and then began to work from home as a tailor making traditional Indian clothes. From this she earns Rs 2000 per month (€28 per month).

Manjula joined the Satara Fashion Project as a means to earn a stable income for her family.

“The course is going really well. My family supports me and often passes by to see how I’m doing.”

Manjula’s dream is to provide her daughter with an education and become financially independent.
